A Hefty Load

Winston Salem had a new set of twins born earlier this year that nearly broke the record. The twins, Sean and Abigail Maynard, were about four pounds shy of the record birth weight for twins but still had a respectable combined weight of 23 pounds, 1 ounce.

Sean William weighed in at 10 pounds, 14 ounces and Abigail weighed in at 12 pounds, 3 ounces.

The twins were delivered two minutes apart by Caesarean section.

The record for twin births is 27 pounds, 12 ounces, and they were born in Arkansas in 1927.
I'm sure there are many women out there who are glad this isn't a record they were competing for!

Large infants are most commonly seen in diabetic mothers and small infants are most commonly seen in mothers who smoke.

Nutrition of the mother has some impact but heavier mothers do not necessarily have heavier babies.
