And you think racist humor is funny and appropriate for posting by the chief of the medical staff of our hospital? How do you think this would reflect on you and the hospital if reported in the newspaper?

I think it's pretty funny! You are assuming that this joke is based on racial undertones. What if it's instead referring to his actual intelligence? People are too quick to "pull the race card".

I bet the local newspaper would love to get a hold of this...
I can see the headline now...

Step 1, HB, is take down the slides.

Step 2 is to explain yourself by editing the exact same post without repeating the "joke."

Step 3 is to apologize.

If you don't think Step 3 is necessary, then Step 2 had better be pretty convincing.

Keep writing. I'll defend that. But this is a misfire of dramatic proportions, which I'm sure you will soon be aware of.

Surely the medical staff at Floyd Memorial didn't have this kind of activity in mind when they elected Dr. Eichenberger to represent them. How can he possibly face Jerrol Miles, the hospital board chairman who is African-American? This is an awful posting.

Did anyone think to read the title? "A most DISTRESSING knock-knock joke."
This "joke" is unlike HB unless he knows that this is a most distressing joke. HB is a very smart man and would not put any post up without foretelling its consequences.
All of you have proven the title of this posting correct because you are all "MOST DISTRESSED."

Anonymous 12:58: HB's posting of this "joke" has to be seen within the context of his recent postings which lambasted the Democratic party and Obama in particular. His rants have been so partisan that there is no way he would be using an item like this to help make a case for better treatment of Obama. He can spin this all he wants when he comes back here, but this kind of racial "tone-deafness" sure looks like deep rooted bigotry. He has embarrassed the people who have supported him in the past.

Regardless of the reasoning behind the posting of this effigy and accomanying "joke", it is completely tasteless and is but another sign of the sickness sweeping through our political system.

A good point, but maybe he doesn't want to make the case that Obama is treated badly. The evidence would point toward that perhaps Obama has a sort of shield i.e. the media?

Again, I agree this one posting of a number is probably not HB's shining moment.

Denmark, my ass. The headline isn't sufficient to excuse this minstrel show. What HB has done is hardly commentary.

What's more, no one is denying him the right to say whatever he's saying, however inartfully. This is just grossly inappropriate, not funny, and not appreciated. It embarrasses his friends, colleagues, and the whole community.

No one's calling for his head. No one's calling for a boycott. The comparison to "Denmark" is inapropos.

He fired. He missed. That's all.

Again: Take down the slides and explain yourself, HB. In the context of your vicious partisanship and political ideology, it's hard to spin this as condemnatory of the "joke."

Let's not forget that HB has used Friday posts for humor, not serious commentary. Given that he generally posts things he considers "funny" on Friday and what we all know of his regard for Obama and Democrats, he just thought it was FUNNY! And, as a life-long Republican who will not be voting for Obama, I am embarrassed to have a bigot like Dr. Eichenberger associate himself with my party.

Misfire? Poor judgment? Calling a speedy football player a "little monkey" is a misfire or poor judgment in the use of language. Finding an overtly racist cartoon like this "funny" can only come from a bigoted mind.

An example of simply using poor judgment would be Fuzzy teasing Tiger about ordering fried chicken for the Master's tournament celebration dinner. And Fuzzy got killed in the national media for that.

The posting of this cartoon goes far beyond simply not thinking through the consequences of what you are saying. This is an example of what was acceptable political humor in the Deep South 50 years ago. It is despicable.

you all are unbelievable. It has been fun friday on this site for about a year. The first tag states humor.

The double standard is almost absurd how liberals can make jokes, poke fun, use caricatures of McCain and Palin as well as another local blog that most of you post regularly on making fun, callling names of local politicians.

You need to take a look in the mirror.

This is pure humor and if you cannot see it, you're blind or just really really biased.

As much as I agree with some of the sentiments expressed, I still can't reconcile anonymous character assassination.

To the extent that it implies one set of rules for certain people and another for others, it is its own form of bigotry.

By all means, speak out against racism, but don't feign righteousness by demanding accountability for speech when you fail to take responsibility for your own words.

HB will have to answer for what he's posted. That standard should apply to all of us.

ANON 2:31. Can you be that out of touch??? It is funny to compare a small town mayor's job (with responsibilities) to Obama's "community organizer" background. HB's posting is pure racism--it is not about Obama's qualifications or political philosophy--it is dismissing him purely on the basis of race. HB should ashamed of himself if he has a scrap of integrity.

ANON 5:03, Please describe what is humorous about the cartoon for you. I would like to know how it could be interpreted any possible way other than as old style racism which reduces individuals to a demeaning stereotype. The message seems clearly to be that it is ridiculous to even consider an uppity black man as president. What other way can you see it?

And don't talk about "my" candidate destructing. I would never vote for Obama on political and economic grounds. But I strongly reject the use of racial bigotry such as that employed by Dr. Eichenberger.

How many times have you called local councilmen horrible names, condemned, made fun of, etc,. etc, etc.

How many times have you bad-mouthed the less educated?

How do you spell double standard "DEMORCRAT"

I agree that all4word is showing his hypocrisy as well.

HB could easily have not allowed any comments ever on his blog but because he believes in the freedoms you hypocritically and selectively accept, he has allowed everyone here to have a voice.

I'd say it speaks volumes for his values

To answer your question, stereotyping Obama is no different than making fun of McCain because of his age or Palin because she is a woman.

When done in humor as this post was and stated in the tag, it is funny.

I could see how this is racist if you're looking for it, but in all honesty, I don't think you all are upset with the caricature because those are all over the place, so the problem must be with the final phrase. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

The final phrase is "Eyes yo new president" 4 words will be easy to break down.

Eyes is a must or the joke makes no sense, kind of like "Orange ya glad I didn't say banana" (A famous knock-knock joke). Conclusion: Eyes is appropriate

Yo. The word that got 37 comments about how racist this is. This is a replacement for the word "your" which #1 wouldn't flow well with the joke. (Eyes your new president sounds like eyes is a verb) and #2 is a very common term now and definitely isn't racist. Yo is used in chatting all the time and so it is in fact culturally appropriate.

"New" and "President" have no racist undertone that i'm aware of so I think we're safe on ALL 4 words. Even in combination. However Dr. Eichenberger, if you want to bow to the will of political correctness I suggest this.

Knock Knock
Who's There?
I'm your
I'm your who?
I'm your new president.

While not funny, it is unobtrusive, maybe even vanilla. (Can I say that? I JUST DID)

Finally,

after 12 hours, someone actually has common sense.

The liberal democrats need to read
Matthew 7:3

"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?

I am especially disappointed with all4word who jumped on this attack bandwagon.

Shame on you

Oh yeah, since some of you've been questioning who authored things recently, the above phrase;

It came from the Bible!

Sorry, can't let this one go. To those of you who are quick to jump to the defense of this "joke," by either applying a childlike grasp of deconstructionism, or far worse by somehow suggesting that those who call out what is a classic example of overt hegemonic racism are actually the racists (something that the angry white male (read Dittohead) is prone to do in a fit of psychological projection ), this is why this "joke" is extremely offensive: https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=16975413&postID=9183743440314066508

For those who won't follow the link in order to learn a little bit about the history of racism in this country, I'll cut and paste one of the many telling passages from the site:

"The coon caricature was one of the stock characters among minstrel performers. Minstrel show audiences laughed at the slow-talking fool who avoided work and all adult responsibilities. This transformed the coon into a comic figure, a source of bitter and vulgar comic relief. He was sometimes renamed "Zip Coon" or "Urban Coon." If the minstrel skit had an ante-bellum setting, the coon was portrayed as a free Black; if the skit's setting postdated slavery, he was portrayed as an urban Black. He remained lazy and good-for-little, but the minstrel shows depicted him as a gaudy dressed "Dandy" who "put on airs." Unlike Mammy and Sambo, Coon did not know his place. He thought he was as smart as White people; however, his frequent malapropisms and distorted logic suggested that his attempt to compete intellectually with Whites was pathetic. His use of bastardized English delighted White audiences and reaffirmed the then commonly held beliefs that Blacks were inherently less intelligent. The minstrel coon's goal was leisure, and his leisure was spent strutting, styling, fighting, avoiding real work, eating watermelons, and making a fool of himself. If he was married, his wife dominated him. If he was single, he sought to please the flesh without entanglements."

If this is too complicated to understand, let me make it very clear: This "joke" is racist. If HB is somehow trying to expose the way that Obama has been portrayed by some of the worst of the worst in this country, he could have found even crueler examples to be sure. But I can't for the life of me find any other examples of this being the case on his site. Add to it that it was posted on "joke day" or "humor day," and any realistic hope for this explanation dissipates.

Richarda,

After you get past your childlike grasp of copying and pasting I will read your article in its entirety. As for your response, I suppose that the problem is indeed with the caricature (didn't see that one coming) and so I would like to link you to your field of dreams. http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=obama+caricatures&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi&oi=property_suggestions&resnum=0&ct=property-revision&cd=1

That ought to provide enough websites for you to lecture on the evils of caricatures. Every president in the past say 232 years has been the target of caricatures, and now that we have a blackish candidate it is racist.
Dr. Eichenberger was wise to apologize, as he is held to a higher standard than all but a very small minority of the US and especially the world. I applaud you Dr. Eichenberger and appreciate what you work to do for our community. Certainly you make mistakes, this is not one of them.

Anon 9:55 seems to have no understanding of the limits of good taste in caricatures. I suppose you would be OK with a cartoon of Joe Lieberman in a striped prison uniform being fed into a crematorium? HB is the face of the medical staff at Floyd Memorial Hospital and his posting has the potential to reflect very poorly on the hospital. His insensitivity is impossible to understand in any context other than a personal racism so embedded that he isn't even aware of it.

Just to be clear,

Richarda is the only person here who has made any attempt to explain what part of this is racist and his explanation is that the caricature paints Barack as a "Coon" (the first truly offensive racial term I've seen in this post). If you agree...well I'm just not sure anyone does.

So if my elementary deconstruction of the problem failed to address the relavent issues, please explain why or what part of the cartoon is racist.

I didn't think it was funny at all when I read it. I hate knock-knock jokes. I do think it is a little funny now because it reminds me when our eloquent candidate was talking about how we need to learn other languages because "ALLS we can say is 'Merci Beaucoup'.

Now quit dodging and explain what about the thing is racist.

As a Black Man, I have withheld my comments thus far, but feel compelled to contribute and I posted this same comment on the current blog.

I was not offended in any way with the post and did not view it as racist in any way. The caricature of Obama was visual humor and it exagerated some of his features as caricatures are supposed to do.

Black humor can be extremely funny just as white humor, religious humor or other humor.

It is only racist when it is done with the specific attitude and intent of motivating racial disharmony.

This post was not done in that spirit and anyone following this blog knows that.

I agree there must be other underlying motives for some of these hateful comments toward the author of the blog.

I find most of this blog to be informative, some to be extremely funny and other posts I don't agree with, but overall I have never seen anything to be bigoted or racist.

As Barck Obama said; "enough is enough"

Let's see some of you intellectuals actually address some of these issues and differences between the candidates.

Sorry BlackMaleDemocrat, this will be my final post, but I was attacked and will address it. Then I will be finished.

Modern racism is holding Barack Obama to a different grammatical standard than we hold George Bush to. Barack Obama has made more than enough gaffes that if, IF, this knock knock joke were indeed suggesting that he is incapable of speaking English, it would be warranted.

"ALLS" I know is that of the "57 or 58 states", you (Anon 1:04) must be from the dumberest of all of them. Maybe next "MEMORIAL DAY" we can gather together and honor the men and women who fought for this country. "SOME OF WHICH I SEE IN THE AUDIENCE" (Our next president might be able to see dead people)

(for those who don't keep up, the caps and quotes are referring to gaffes that Barack the chosen one Obama has made. The quotes are not exact and are being used for reference to gaffes only.)
