CEO up to his old tricks

Not surprising to many worker-bees at Floyd, the Administration is reportedly asking for another VP position while they continue to cut other departments and freeze hiring.

The word is circulating fast that the CEO has once again asked to move someone else into a VP position in the midst of a financial crisis.

Anger is probably too kind a word to use for the emotions felt by many directors and middle management as well as the staff in general.

Physicians are really concerned about the potential move and the perception it gives to everyone.

If the financials continue to be bad enough that administration wants to make further cuts in staffing, then there certainly cannot be enough money for another VP.

There is no rational explanation that can be given to make this move even if they want to wait until the first of the year. Is there fear we may lose a good employee if the promotion isn't given or is there another reason?

Rarely is it the right decision to promote someone because of potentially losing them to another institution.

I am confident the Board under its current leadership will see the hypocrisy of this and make the right decision!

On another note, the Board held an emergency unscheduled meeting last night at the office of the Board's attorney. This is extremely unusual and certainly makes you wonder if there is not going to be some significant changes.

We'll wait and see what comes out in the next day or so.

In your role as an expert management consultant you tell us:

"Rarely is it the right decision to promote someone because of potentially losing them to another institution."

I am sure that information will come as a surprise to the CEOs and HR officers at most large organizations who compete fiercely for top talent. Hiring bonuses, retention bonuses, stock option awards customized salary packages and, yes, promotions to more responsible positions are FREQUENTLY, not rarely, used to attract and keep key employees. Companies unwilling or unable to retain high performers are doomed to mediocrity.

You also write: "There is no rational explanation that can be given to make this move"

How do you know there is no good reason? Have you read a proposal for the promotion? Have you talked to anyone supporting the idea? How can you just dismiss something out of hand without any knowledge of what is behind it?

hey anonymous,

You are obscessed with HB and the blog. I bet you dream about it and think about it 24/7.

You are the first critic every morning for some strange reason.

HB is entitled to his opinions just as you are to your rude comments.

HB is right. Promoting someone else to a VP during this financial problem, staffing cuts, etc, is poor judgemtment and reaps of hypocrisy.

Promotions should not be made because an employee threatens to leave.

"reaps of hypocrisy."

What the hell does that mean?

Speaking of hypocrisy, how do you explain this:

"A few answers to some questions although I will not respond to some of the anonymous accusations until they are willing to give their identity."

There have been several times that anonymous posters have been on your side and you responded. Most of the commentators on this board are anonymous. Either you are running an open board or you are not. Let's not forget that for a period of time your identity(as was mine)was not known.

Mark

HB's identity was unknown for a very short period of time and that has nothing to do with the post.

Why would anyone continually want to address rude responses and accusations when you know they must be coming from someone with his/her own agenda.

It is HB's blog. If they want one, it is free to set up and free to run.

I see the counter is over 90,000 and still increasing. A lot of people must find this pretty interesting and/or informative.

Keep up the good work keeping us informed. You are making a difference no matter how many skeptics say otherwise

The emergency meeting last night sounds like something might be happening. Maybe you were right all along. I'll bet the critics will never admit that.

So, Dr. Dan, all personnel decisions should now be based on whether other employees will approve of them or not?

OK, Senator McCarthy, just what other reason would you suspect?

The CEO's actions are so typical. He reminds of King Louis XVI and we all know what happened there in France a few years ago. Thanks for the great resource of information and forum for public opinion Dr. Dan.

My opinion is rather than adding ANOTHER vice president to the administration, use the funds to hire additional housekeepers, nursing staff or personnel who will be productive for the hospital. No cuts have been made in administration, already one additional vice president added only because he was going to leave. It doesn't help the moral or work environment when areas are working on the frontline with patients short staffed while no one in administration has felt the effects and has even added unneccessary positions.

One of the hardest things for people to accept is that someone else is capable of making a larger contribution and is more valuable. If all personnel decisions are going to be made on the basis of whether less valuable people are going to get their feelings hurt, then you might as well fire everyone in management and just let the employees vote on everything. That should be very efficient and, I am sure, have a wonderful result.

I implore anyone out there to search google on whether a company should give a counteroffer to someone who threatens to leave.

It is overwhelmingly not in the employees or the companies long term best interest.

That is the advice of most all consultants in the field

Everyone is so afraid of someone else getting ahead. I guess it is easier to live with failure if you prevent anyone else from being successful.

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO GET CANDLE WAX OUT OF A CABLE-KNIT SWEATER? Please??

Also, doc, I get the foot-kissing in the picture that goes along with your post, but what's with the last two people in line? Are they tossing salad? Is that what's really going on behind closed doors at Floyd? Gross.

To Anonymous 7:18
Will he be taking the Central Service Manager with him comment:I hope he does not! Lot's of her associates know that she supports them and that her honesty at what ever cost, she will support them.OR spends many days trying to blame Central, when she knows they have nurses that have to have someone to point the finger at because their is some people in OR that has to always be on a witch hunt. She is a vary strong indiv.and will only leave when the new CEO holds all depts.accountable.IF she leaves so will at least six of us,and then their will not be a Cental Service dept.in place. She has always been able to see both sides. The OR and scrub techs are supposed to know their job as well.Pointing fingers is just another way that takes the attention off of the OR staff. When you have staff in management that want to make issues personal, and continue to blame any or other depts.for their in ability to manage and follow hospital guide lines then what you will continue to get is finger pointing. The OR/CS liasion has been out to undermine Central from day 1.It is interesting that when you observe an associate that doesn't have her surgical tech degree much less her Central Service certification degree be able to convince anyone much less the docs that she has a clue what is going on in Floyd's real world. She finds fault with all that Central(second shift)produces but can't put any the the instruments together herself! Staff has continued to ask on second for her involvement ,only to be told that that's not her job.How can anyone write daily that Central can't perform but she can't do the funtions of Central her self?WE put thousands of instruments pans together and only hear when Stephanie wants to go to the techs and complain that Central screwed up.She is always been part of a problem, not part of the solution.Surgery daily complais to Cenrtal that she is trouble, but she is well protected. Some director's like having the tension(they don't know anything else)and encourges this kind of work environment.I'm leaving in two weeks, but hopefully someone will look that this girl is trouble for all of Floyd.
