To Dust or Not to Dust???

Washing laundry in water that is 140 degrees Fahrenheit or higher kills more dust mites than washing clothes in cooler temperatures, according to a study presented recently at the American Thoracic Society's International Conference in San Francisco.

The study compared allergen levels on cotton sheets after washing them at various temperatures. When the clothing was washed at 140 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, all dust mites were killed, compared with 6.5 percent at lower temperatures (104 degrees). An alternative may be to wash clothing at a lower temperature and then rinse it twice with cold water for three minutes, as this removes more allergens, such as pollen.

A different study has suggested that house dust has its benefits. Melisa Celaya, of the Arizona Respiratory Center in Tucson, and colleagues report that children who live in homes with low levels of endotoxin, a component of dust, were more likely to develop wheezing or eczema by age 3. By contrast, higher amounts of endotoxin seemed to protect the children from wheezing and eczema.

Going forward, "we will be looking at the relationship between endotoxin levels in the home and chemicals (called cytokines) that are produced by certain immune system cells, to see why children exposed to lower levels are developing more allergic symptpms later on," Celaya said in a statement.

As of now, science once again leaves us hanging. Is exposure to dust and dirt harmful or is it beneficial?

I would be interested to know of any reasearch that addresses the benefit of drying the clothes in a clothes dryer. Does the heat kill the dust mites thereby making water temp of 140 unnecessary?
We keep our water temp. at about 120 for two reasons: to prevent accidental burn and the second reason, for pure economy...it's cheaper.
I have always double rinsed my laundry to remove any residual soap, but didn't know that it helped remove allergens. Good to know.

Double rinsing? I feel silly even asking, but I've never heard of this. Is it a setting on some washers, or do you manually set it to rinse again after the cycle completes?

And regarding dirt:
my very unscientific, unprofessional opinion is that children need dirt and bugs in their lives in order to grow up well-adjusted. Let them eat mudpies!

The conclusion is the same conclusion reached at the end of every study: More research is needed

to Just jonna:
By double rinsing, I mean that I just manually reset to rinse a second time. I found the colors are brighter and the clothes look cleaner. I actually started this years ago when my kids were babies. I used the cloth diapers and soaked them in bleach. I didn't want the chemical residue so I rinsed twice.

Could Anonymous 05:06 possibly be Mrs. HB? The incomprehensibility of the message seems too similar to be coincidental.

Regarding: "WE want to see this hospital survive.Director's and Adminstrationwant want to see it fail.BIG TIME"

Just what would be the motivation for directors and administration to want the hospital to fail?
