Commissioners and Board meet tomorrow

Tomorrow night the new County Commissioners will meet with the new Board of Directors for the first time at their quarterly meeting.

This will be the first opportunity to meet privately since they each have assumed their respective roles.

What is really nice to hear is that they are considering having an executive session with just the Board and Commissioners and no one else. This is an idea that had been discussed before but never allowed by previous chairmen because of personal preferences and relationships.

With the ongoing issues related to the finances, staffing and morale, it is an idea long overdue and very worthwhile.

The Commissioners have been hearing a lot from many individuals and some Board members have taken an active role in seeking out information about the current situation.

This will give each of them the opportunity to openly discuss what they have learned and continue to formulate the plan to rectify some of the problems.

My compliments to the Chairman and Commissioners for not avoiding conflict as so many others have in the past.

Maybe they can move the process along of hiring the CFO? One who will be over the contracting for the organization - it's not necessarily all about volumes if reimbursement outlined in managed care contracts is not pursued aggressively. And, to this point, it has not been.

HB It is time for you to stop hurting Floyd. After all Floyd is where you got your start. We have a very good leader in Mr.Hanson.You have to be a hateful person your self and a sad person. It is people like you who will hurt Floyd not the Leadership. So THINK

This is to anonymous 09:10p.m., it is apparent that you don't know Dr.Dan and the compassion he has for the employees at Floyd. He is a gentle man but one with an educated opinion. Mr.Hanson is not a good leader nor has he ever been since he came July 1990. We have steadily declined over his years tenure and I for one am ready to get a new leader and regain our good name as a competent hospital in our community.

To the person who wrote: "We have steadily declined over his years tenure"

Did you lose your eyesight at about the time Hanson arrived? Do say that the hospital has been in decline during that period is one of the very dumbest things I have ever read.

I have worked during the time that Mr Hanson and prior to him and the Hospital has enlarged yes but morale and declined. Patient care has increased because of knowledge and available all the around at all hospitals not just Floyd. This would have happened under anyone. Floyd has lost a lot of great employee's with many good years of service because of their salaries and benefits were getting to high. You could hire someone just off the streets for less. I am one of those employee's with no write up in my file. But, I would be willing to go back for less pay once Mr. Hanson was gone.

Anon 8:30,
I am not taking sides in this debate but what you just wrote is basically true for all hospitals over the last 10 years. Even business in general. Look at the union givebacks. Look at the massive layoffs across many fields of business. Outsourcing, etc.

This is in regards to anonymous O6:55a.m. and his statement: I beg to differ with you we (the Hospital) have been in a steady decline - sure we have grown structurally but morale amongst the employees has plummeted. Apparently, you are not an employee because we have lost good competent people due to lack of leadership and this has hurt the morale among the employees when you don't feel your job is secure even after good evaluations, this affects the overall morale within. I am sure you realize a building is just that and it takes the people to make the organization work. We truly need a change in leadership.

Retiree: You don't know what you are talking about. Floyd has not experienced high turnover rates and, in fact, has lower employee turnover than other hospitals in the region. You are just blaming your individual problems on management.

Just how do you think "a change in leadership" would make things better? Do you think staffing levels would increase? Would reimbursement pressure from insurance companies and government suddenly go away? Grow up! Healthcare is a tough industry everywhere these days. Returning to the more relaxed 60's or 70's is pointless dreaming.

quality leadership would not have missed $11.5 million dollars in accounting.

This is pure incompetence and the employees and patients are having to deal with the consequences.

To 9:58 you must not work at the hospital to say that they don't have a high turnover rate. Look at the job openings listing. I realize that there is a freeze on hiring now but go back for past years. You will still find a large list always. It is a fact! Ask someone in Human Resources yourself, to see past posting. But, Mr Hanson probably won't let you see them.

Anonymous 5:36 mistakes any turnover rate for a high turnover rate. It has been mentioned on this blog many times in the past that Floyd has traditionally had a lower turnover rate than other hospitals in this region. Staffing and working conditions are often much more difficult at other area hospitals and the workforce tends to move around a lot more. We have been lucky to have a relatively stable staff. Check out all the people who get recognized for many years of service. That is quite rare in other facilities.

Turnover rates will be low as long as open positions are deleted from existence. You can't turn over what is not there, yet another way to manipulate the truth about what is really going on.

You must not know anything about what is going on among competing hospitals. Most of the others in our area would love to have our stable workforce. Do you ever talk to anyone working in other hospitals? If you think staffing is tight at Floyd, try ANY of the Louisville hospitals. They make working at Floyd look like a dream. Our folks have become spoiled and have no idea how good they have it. If you don't believe it, go interview.

I guess you negative people think by removing Mr.Hanson would solve things, and Mr wonderful would come in and everything would be great, give Mr.Hanson a chance to resolve these problems,i know several employes who left over my many years at floyd, that wish they had thier jobs back, so what does that tell you about working at floyd, here is one simple thing if you do not like working at floyd,QUIT.....

Long years of services at Floyd doesn't mean anything. I know. I have a 25 year pin. Was I appreciated I thought so till my last day talk with Mr Hanson he made me feel like a dog. I have never been talked to like that before in my life and this was suppose to be an exit interview. I was leaving to help care for my father. I loved my job. Loved the hospital had great respect would recommend it always, but have been a patient recently, and the care isn't what it used to be. Sorry. It, not the staff fault, that they need more help, when they use to have more employee to patient ratio. Cuts in other departments, I ended up staying extra days because we couldn't get my x-rays scheduled till the next day for my ultrasound that I needed to have a full bladder and had been drinking barium but guess what they forget to clamp off my catheter. I was private pay. Now, who do you think should pay for these types of problems? Oh, Yes I had asked the aide about it, she said that she was working the whole side 16 patients but would mention it to the nurse that I didn't think it was clamped off. I still rang the bell, but no came anymore. There were numerous other problems during my stay that I won't go into it might totally scare other people that never worked in a hospital, but since I have I know that things happen. This one cost me additional money and time and some discomfort. But I still have a lifetime of memories of the hospital since I worked at Floyd and my Father started at the Hospital as one of the first Physician's on the staff. I know he would be very sad to see what has become of the hospital. He loved his County hospital and going to the surrounding hospitals to care for the Community. He loved being in this Community by taking part in it by Hospital Board Meetings, School Board, Green Valley Convalescent, and many more. But, I know he wouldn't like seeing this huge debt, or building entrance way. Yes, I am proud to give my name.

Maybe some of these employees should be leaving, at my last stay at Floyd after have 2 throat surgeries the first meal I received was Toast and Bacon. Needless to say, I was unable to swallow anything, whomever made the choice for my diet that day, certainly was not at her/his best.
Also, after having a mammogram, the report was filed away, my Dr. did not receive a copy, upon investigation it was found that I needed to return for follow-up and
I was not contacted by anyone, even thought the Radiologist had requested it. All this was discovered when I picked up my records and went elsewhere. Unless people make Management aware, they can not be expected to know that errors are being made. Incompetence
should not be tolerated in a workplace, even more so in a hospital.

i agree with all the people that say that floyd is going down hill, i know several people that work at floyd and have heard all the story about cutting positions, and etc etc. I was in the hospital last year , i didn't receive the care i needed, everytime you pushed the button for the nurse, it would be hours at a time before they would come check on you, they where short handed was all i kept hearing, i should have been out of there at 12, but no i had to stay until 3 or 4 because they forgot to get my antibodic and potassium. The care was terriable, i also was almost given a medication i didn;t need, and was also charged by floyd for it. Then like a month later i start getting all my bills for my hospital stay and all that, sit up a payment plan with floyd, and last month i was called and told i was being turned over to a collection agency because i wasn;t making my payments, and to add to it they told me my bill had went up because my insurance reapplied somethings, so then i called my insurane company they had no records of reapplying anything with floyd, didn't know why floyd was telling me that. The billing dept at floyd couldn't even tell me what the insurance reapplied, and also would even look up and see what it was for. i strongly believe floyd is hurting more then you think. they are just trying to hide it and not lose everything.

Gosh, Anonymous 8:17, I can easily understand your frustration. How could any organization confuse/or get confused dealing with someone with your strong communication skills?

Aside from Glimmer of Hope back in December, have we heard anything positive about the organization, it's direction or it's leadership from the healthblogger? Is he a great role model and leader, a true motivator, a change agent, or visionary? Does he inspire others including his physician colleagues, to greatness and to achieve their goals towards individual development, and empower people to be their
professional best?

In answer to 9:54's question.
I'd be inclined to say that the hospital is currently in a 'full code' trying to save it's own life. A true visionary CEO would have known better to allow such mischief, and should have been better in tune with what's going on in the organization.
No automatic defibrillator will help this one!

I know the majority of Directors are doing their best to cut as deemed necessary by their authority figures. Its a no win situation for them due to the pressure received from above. Its obvious they are feeling threatened while they attempt to deliver the care expected by the medical staff and patients. The VP's really have no inclination what its like to run a department effectively on a day-to-day basis. They only see numbers from the financial staff crunched using their policies and procedures and may not even be relevant to the actuals. I feel bad for them struggling to keep their reputation intact, customers satisfied, employees not feeling worthless. The solution is not in their hands though.
