How do we compare?

As more information is being released about the $11.5 million dollar accounting error at Floyd, people are wondering if the financial picture that has been touted is really real.

Based on other nonprofit entities, there have been steady increases as seen in the above graph.

When the external audit is completed, we will have a better idea of whether we have been misled about the financial situation at Floyd.

HUH??

The chief financial officer left or was dismissed and it was subsequently discovered that previous financial statements WERE incorrect. So there is no question that misleading information was put out. Now, it seems to me, the remaining questions are to determine the exact amount of the final correction and whether senior officers other than the CFO were involved. Frankly, that seems unlikely since he was let go rather than propped up.

As a patient, more important than the financial situation to me is the quality of service. As the only unaccredited hospital in Indiana according to JCAHO, Floyd has more problems than just finances.

(For skeptics of the JCAHO process, statistics show that 99% of hospitals pass their tests.)

So how do you compare? Not very well according to your finances and your quality of service. A second-rate organization is just not good enough in the health care industry. Lives are at stake.

In regards to anonymous 08:24a.m., yesterday in the Indianapolis Star, Floyd Memorial Hospital was listed as one of the top 10 places to work in the state of Indiana. I thought that was very interesting since anonymous 08:24a.m, is rather negative. I don't believe the "quality of care" has ever been a problem. I too am anxious to see the results of the external audit.

It is not only a financial problem. What is happening in the laboratory for instance? I work in the lab and we are now offering a U$100.00 bonus a day for any phlebotomist who is willing to work 2nd shift...and we are in trouble with our finances! I did not understand why some good people were leaving our lab and now I do. I heard that Labcorp was going to take over the lab and even knowing labcorp only cares about numbers and money, I still think it might be a good idea. Can anyone explain to me how we got to this point in the lab? Our director does not have a clue about anything that happens in the lab. Has anyone seen his "office"? Ask for a document you gave him yesterday and see if he can find it! It is a mess and the extension of his "organization skills". HE is going to cause the lab to be outsorced. And his boss should be held responsible also for not having the guts to eliminate an incompetent director...the director has a bad reputation all over Louisville. We have no phlebotomists and it is just because he did not hire them quick enough. When is our CEO and his administration going to realize how bad our lab director is? The only thing he can do right is work with graphics and that is probably how he "masks" all the problems the lab has had during his time at Floyd. We need help!

Regarding the article in the Indianapolis Star, I am not sure who they surveyed for this, but it surely was not the employees.

Actually FMH employees were invited to complete the survey

Strictly just my opinion as an outsider looking in, but it seems to me that Floyd used to be a nice, sleepy community hospital where employees could take smoke breaks, walks and be incompetent and it didn't seem to matter. It was acceptable because it was family, the beds were full, the employees were happy and the employees had a job for life. Things have changed unfortunately since the expansion. The employees can't smoke, the work pace has increased and the hospital is in debt. It all brings about a more "corporate" environment instead of a family environment. "Our way or the highway", "let's look at our numbers" In this type of stressful environment I think the management team could help the employees by at least bringing back the outdoor smoking shacks, you probably would see the employee's demeanor improve, since you like numbers, 85.36785%!

Ah yes! More smoking oppurtunities. Why hasn't anyone else thought of this remarkable solution before. Another illustration of the lack of vision plaguing FMHHS.

For every smoker that would benefit for bringing back the vulger smoke shack, you have equal amount of non smokers that would leave. You want to talk about decrease in production and patient satifsfaction, let the smokers spend on average 2 hours a day in the smoke shack instead of doing there job, good idea. Idiot.

You must be a non smoker. Come on, lighten up. Sounds like you need to smoke or better yet have a drink or have an orgasm.

The dispostion of the employees might improve if they could smoke, they could sit and discuss important issues and it would reduce the cost of stocking so many nicotine patchs and handing them out.

Hey anonymous 8:24am yesterday.I don't think that FMHHS is a second rate hospital.Every patient that I have taken care of perfer Floyd over Clark anyday. They love the staff and care they receive.I would invite you come to my unit and tell the nurses I work with that we are second rate and we put our patient lives at risk.

Statement is true, the Director of Finance had first hand participation in the destruction of the hospital finances and while she may have been directed by the ex CFO, she did not do anything about it. Others brought up Red flags and nothing was done about it. The Director of Finance cant be trusted and should not be in any role, including interim CFO

In defense of smokers, we are allowed two ten minute breaks and one half-hour break. How I choose to spend that time is none of your business. If they recreate a designated smoking area, then all you non-smokers can avoid it. I have an idea: if I can't smoke then they should take away all the snacks from fat people. I guarantee they spend more time eating than I do smoking.

That may be true, but from my experience, most smokers cant keep it limited to 2 (10) minute breaks and during lunch. I know for sure that Floyd has smokers that used to smoke 8-10 times per day, and that does not include the daily smoking sessions in the bathroom stall.

No, they wont kick your butt, most of the old hags are busy taking the 8-10 smoke breaks on the internet. I have been there many times when you constantly here call lights going unanswered. You may get top notch service, but its a crap shoot as to when you get it, but what do I know, I am not a nurse, and lord knows they think they know it all.

The billing system at Floyd is a joke. First get a bill with an offered discount. Now we as employees are told there is processing errors by Humana and we are rebilled for a new amount we owe. We are self funded so if we are not paying our own claims correctly, how do we know we are billing patient accounts correctly? No one knows what is going on. It is a terrible situation, one I am sure the big Louisville hospitals's administration would not stand for.

Dont be so sure that the other hospitals in the area dont have the same issues. I have been billed by 3 in the area including Floyd and Floyd was the only one that had a accurate listing of the charges. Its not Floyds fault when a Insurer pays incorrectly and then reprocesses for payment, thus changing the patient responsibility. The billing system at Floyd is just fine and I am sure Floyd has just as much of a problem collection from its own associates as it does the general public.

Nurses dont have access to the internet.Billing isn't the best but neither is Harrison County.I had a medical procedure done there.I never received a bill till collection agnecy tried to collect 6 years later.Floyd isnt the only one with billing problems.

Complain about the call lights.Well maybe its people who put them on every 1 minute for stupid stuff. Its not a freakin hotel.Alot of lazy people abuse the call lights.Dont be calling any nurse a hag till you walk in her shoes.Someday you will be sick and a "hag" nurse will have to take care of you.Hopefully you will go across the river and deal with real "HAG" nurses.
