Short Man, Strong Arm

Well the CEO is at it again. He has once again sent out a letter to the middle management about contributing to the PAC’s (political action committees).

He no longer puts in writing what the expectation is, but directors and managers have been told they are expected to contribute $50 dollars at the manager level and $100 dollars at the Director level.

This really places a burden on some of these workers who have families, single parents, and kids in college etc.

This was discussed in 2005 at the Board level and the CEO knew that this was not something the Board condoned and did not feel should continue. Since there are new Board members who were not present in 2005, he is once again challenging the direction of the Board.

Rather than risk putting the mandate in writing, he has carefully worded the above letter so that it does not directly tell them what is expected. But they all have been informed verbally what the expectation is.

The hospital receives a list of everyone who contributes and those who don’t have gotten a reminder telephone call in the past.

With the financial strains, lack of raises and bonuses for some of these middle management personnel, this continues to show the CEO’s lack of understanding and concern.

It is coercive, unfair, and shows a complete lack of compassion for the struggles of the middle management.

What Class! "Short Man, Strong Arm"? Perhaps an appropriate response should be:

"UGLY DOCTOR, SILLY POST"

You are right doc. Very inappropriate of the CEO and shows his complete lack of understanding.

As for anonoymous above, why don't you address the topic. This is inappropriate from a CEO whose organization is failing, it is strong-arming and the CEO is short.

The post isn't silly and the doctor may or may not be ugly.

shortnes of stature is relative to who's standing near but shortness of character is noticed by all. mr hanson is short sighted and short on compassion. his actions alienate those who would otherwise respect him.

I would be interested in seeing a scan of the brochure. Baring that, what $ amount is "club" level?

I am not much for his letter either, especially as signed in his official capacity. Unfortunately, it happens in many, if not most, large businesses.

So are there alot of candidates running who don't care about the health of Hoosiers?

That headline really is in bad taste. Do you think it is appropriate for a doctor to make fun of the physical attributes of others? Very poor judgment if you ask me.

Just another exapmple of why the current regime needs to be dismissed. None of us can help the genes we get however. Let's just hope the headline for the future CEO of FMHHs would be more like Good Leader, Compassionate Arms.

Calling someone "short" who is about 5 ft 2 inches tall as an adult male is not distasteful. It is an accurate assessment.

You must be uncomfortable with the truth as most of the negative anonymous commenters are on this site.

Ask any of the current Board members when they recieved any financial information in the past 2 months. Ask them why. Our hospital is failing and HB has been right all along.

With all of the horrible accusations and names people have called HB on the site, referring to a short man as "short" is pretty silly.

"HB has been right all along."

You have to be kidding...He has complained about virtually everything for the last two years, so, like a broken clock, he has to be right at least a couple of times. He has also been dead wrong on lots of things and has engaged in some serious character assassination along the way. And...if all the issues are so clear to his supporters, how come specific individuals and departments have been praised by some of his followers and maligned by others? Could it be that different people just see things differently or what?

The financial information speaks for itself and validates everything about the incompentant administration and CEO.

Other bloggers have personal issues with each other in various departments but this in no way discredits all of the information about the decline of Floyd under this CEO

Another thing...

It is totally ILLEGAL to put this request in the hands of management employees on hospital letterhead and on hospital time. Recent PAC laws are very clear on this.

This is a long time practice of the CEO used to his benefit and stature. It is outrageous and should be stopped immediately. He continues to be one of the few I know of that mandates giving levels. Don't take my word for it...ask around.

This issue will now surely go before the Board. The CEO should have had the guts to "C.C." the Chairman on the letter or at least notify the Board on the practice of expected giving levels. Let's see if it's on the next agenda...(maybe it will be, now).

I suggest managers stand down on this request. Let's see who supports it. Lot's of organizations like the hospital association have PACs...that's not the issue. The issue is the intimidation, rigidity and lack of perspective of the CEO.

There are several "club" levels.

These include:

$1,000 Ben Franklin Club
$500 Chairman's Circle
$250 Capital Club
$150 Helen H. Barrett Club

Anonymous 9:53, please explain with appropriate citations just why you think this is illegal. Any reason to doubt that this legal direction easily found on the internet is incorrect: "Election laws say employers can solicit their employees for political contributions, on company time, using company paper and ink. But the law explicitly states corporations cannot use threats or financial reprisals in conjunction with that solicitation."

I doubt that you can find anyone who has ever been fired, demoted or lost pay because he/she failed to contribute to this PAC.

Is it not true that all management positions at Floyd are required to donate to the United Way? I know this happens at a lot of corporations but I find that tasteless as well.

Anyone in management that can't afford $100.00 to support this program should find another management postion.(at another facility)Get real here people, they make more and earn more vacation time then any of the hospital associates. They also get free life insurance(management perk)I woulden't worry to much about them going hungry. My ex works in management and is well taken care of at Floyd.Find another issue to complain about. You are off track here.

Hey 7:42 (if you're the same as 7:40 on the Male Slug post), there you go assuming again. Who says the ex is a "she?"

Did we all read what came after "Another thing" from 5/17? We should always read what comes after an opening like that...it could be important.

Well I can see despite your participation in board meetings (for several years now) and holding a medical staff office vice-chair position, you still have not learned how to express your opposition to administrative practices in a constructive manner. How did you receive a copy of the letter, from a disgruntled member of management? Know this, posting letters like this only causes discord for the very employees and middle management you profess to support.

Albeit true that associates at a certain level are encouraged, so to speak, to donate to various causes, they are also expected to donate their time to community events, some of which, occur on during the workday. In essence, the hospital is paying for them to assist at functions outside the hospital as well. This is not a practice not unlike those at many other organizations or corporations.

More fortifying would be to see a post about the organization’s countless benefactions over the years.

Perhaps there will come a time when you will learn to channel your voice and influence to make positive change and support the organization, associates and physician colleages that you so freely malign.

Many doubt that time will ever come.

Positive changes are occuring in the fact that the CFO is gone and the CEO is on a shortened time frame.

This would not have happened were it not for HB pushing the issue, asking the hard questions and holding the CEO accountable.

We would not have had this Board chairman were it not for HB. We would have gotten stuck with Ms. Garner.

What a disaster that would have been. The CEO would continue to be manipulating everything from the finances to the staff to the information given to the Board and County Commissioners.

I'd say HB has done all of us a service and their are very, very few outside of the administration that feel otherwise.

I'd like to see the employee survey to which you refer when making comments like, "I'd say HB has done all of us a service and their are very, very few outside of the administration that feel otherwise." Is it in a format that we might be able to view on this page?

(I ask that out of general curiosity, and I doubt I'm the only one. I am not the poster from 6:23)
