Indiana uninsured

The ISMA sent out this announcement last week. It has some good news related to attempts at trying to cover more of the Indiana uninsured.

It unfortunately does not attempt to fix the reimbursement schedule that is severely flawed and contributing to the access problems in Indiana.

The ISMA was disappointed as were most physicians about the politics involved in the recent tax proposal on the cigarettes. It was harmful for the healthcare of Indiana and a shameful display of partisan politics.

In my humble opinion, basing th funding mechanism for such an important and needed program on such a volatile commodity as cigarette taxes is a best a dangerous proposal, and at worst a financial disaster waiting to happen.
There are so many smokers who would simply not quit smoking, but instead start leaving state to buy cigarettes, or buy them online, completely avoiding the tax that is proposed to be used to provide insurance for millions of hoosiers who are medically indigent.
In addition to this problem, increase the taxes on smokes will not decrease the number of smokers in the state, it will only serve to decrease the amount of money that what is statistically the lowest income earners in the states have on hand.
We need universal coverage, badly, but we also need to fund such coverage with a stable, continuous tax base, it could probably be easily funded by a 0.5% increase on general sales taxes, that way, everyone in the state will carry the burden not just one group of hoosiers who are the lowest income earners to start with.
