April Board Meeting

The Board met last night and discussed several ongoing issues as well as making the recommendation on the selection of the new CFO. We were informed that the offer was made and the CFO did accept it. He will begin his new duties on June 1, 2007.

One interesting note from the meeting is that with all the financial problems facing Floyd, there were no financial numbers given for the previous month. When questioned about this, the answer given was that the audit was underway and the audit firm thought it best to hold the release of any more numbers until the audit is completed.

We were told last month that the hospital has been really busy and the financials should be good this month. Whether this turns out to be true is still to be determined, but when no numbers are given, it certainly makes you wonder. When I asked direct questions related to the issue, very indirect answers were given.

The financials are very important as it relates directly to staffing and as Vice Chief of Staff, I along with other members of the medical staff are still very concerned about our staffing situation and lack thereof. Morale in some critical areas is worsening and many of us fear we will be losing more good nurses and other personnel.

It is difficult to give any specific answers to employee's questions on the financial situation because of the ongoing selective release of information. The final audit report is supposed to be completed by the end of may, but when administration makes comments like "they (the auditing firm) will be recommending better internal audits", it makes you wonder what else is not being said. Trust remains a key concern regarding information received from administration.

The only reassuring aspect of this whole situation is that the Chairman appears to be truly in charge. This gives many of us a sense of reassurance, but I still do not believe he is getting all of the information. As I have stated before, I believe people make the right decisons when they have all the information.

I wonder how many dozens of times in the past couple of years you have made a comment similar to: "Morale in some critical areas is worsening". What a negative personal atmosphere you must project around yourself.

You are clueless. The atmosphere is horrible because of the severe cut in staffing and the poor financial situation. The administration is failing and employees see no hope.

There is a lot more financial problems than being said and we here it from people in various departments.

Dr. Dan continues to advocate for more staff and we are greatful

Fire the CEO and you will see morale improve in a hurry

HB, I have a couple of questions for you. 1st, after the expansion project, is Floyd losing alot of money or just not making money? 2nd, Are any of the county commisioners able to really understand this rather complex organization's financial situation and just as important it's significance to the county's finances?

I couldn't agree more about the staffing concerns. Unfortunately, a family member has recently been hospitalised and the drop in percieved quality of care and the general cleanliness of the room is shocking. We are losing a valuable community asset and need quick, decisive action to right the ship. If not, privatization is inevitable, and I'm not sure that best serves the community.
Someone needs to emphasize that we are dealing with individuals and families who deserve better.

All the frantic "Chicken Littles" have been racing around screaming: "the sky is falling at the hospital" for the last two years on this blog. And yet...the hospital remains open, patients get admitted and discharged and the sun comes up and sets every day. Doesn't it ever get tiring to always be in such a negative mindset?

So rather than monitoring the finances of the hospital, we should just wait until it closes before concluding how things are going?

Of course not. You should jump to conclusions whether you know what you are talking about or not. It is the time-honored tradition at this blog.

What it boils down to, is common sense. No matter how much anyone is tired of hearing negative comments, there is obviously something terribly amiss at FMH.

It appears some people are in denial and refuse to even consider that something is wrong. For those of you who are quick to criticize anyone who questions why so much negativity exists...and I mean beyond a mere personality clash between the CEO and Dr. DAn, then I ask you to seriously examine your motives and objectivity.

Something much bigger than one physician has caused something to go awry. Can you not be a little more objective and open to questioning why? Far too much energy is being spent on useless arguing. I challenge you to use the grey matter in your head to objectively analyze the issues.

Let's leave the sarcasm in the trash where it belongs.

Dr. Dan, I have a question for you.
You wrote, "The only reassuring aspect of this whole situation is that the Chairman appears to be truly in charge. This gives many of us a sense of reassurance, but I still do not believe he is getting all of the information."

What is the Chairman's response when he and the rest of the Board are not getting complete information? If he is truly in charge, why is he allowing vague information to continue?

Just what do you mean when you say "he is in charge."

How are the older Board Members responding to the new leadership style? And what is their position since all of this has evolved?

Are they still as defensive of the CEO? What is their response when asked how this fiasco occurred under their stewardship? Wasn't the last Board Chairman the president of a local bank? Is he embarrassed since so much of the problem is financial?

I have said for a very long time that the commissioners do not have a good enough grasp on the operations of a medical facility to know who is qualified to serve as a board member. It is because of this reason that a board member doesn't ask questions. They simply don't know. They simply cannot make qualified decisions.

They too have been abused, first by being appointed to a position for which they are not qualified and then secondly by a CEO who took advantage of their insecurity and lack of expertise.

The Floyd County Commissioners appoint the hospital board members, perhaps you should question them on their selection. Or else indicate your support or disagreement with their decision making when it comes time to vote.

I like the sarcasm. I think it's rather zesty.

I read an article in the NA Tribune stating the board members should be elected rather than selected. It was from a political figure in Salem and a manager in HIM. I doubt the Floyd County Commissioners would elect someone from out of county but she/he may be worth seeking with her background.
