Rescinding rule

After careful consideration and discussion with individuals I respect, I have decided to rescind the previous comment moderation and reopen the Blog to even those who comment anonymously.

Using my current internet browser, I will have the ability to delete comments after they have been posted if they seem objectionable. The old browser I was using (Opera) did not allow this function because of some setting problems, but the new browser seems more functional.

Deletions of what seems objectionable will occur only after they are posted and will not in any way prevent comments being posted in “real time”. No comment will be screened before being posted, but could be deleted later if it seems too rude or personal and directed towards a "non-public" official.

I apologize to the readers if I have missed overly rude or inappropriate comments in the past. I do not always have the time to look back at some late comments that are posted and will try harder to not overlook them.

Again, the goal of this blog is to be informative as well as challenging and we should hold those in power accountable to the duties for which they are hired and/or elected.

I appreciate the comments, emails, and phone calls I have received from many friends and colleagues including “lawguy”, “iamhoosier”, concernedemployee and several others.

I continue to encourage rational discourse in the discussion of all topics. It remains disappointing there are those in power who continue to hide behind the veil of secrecy and anonymity and cannot admit their biases and personal agendas.

To use your own phrasing, you are making accusations that you can't validate. Why is is so hard to accept that someone can disagree with you AND not be connected to the hospital? The hospital is a community asset which belongs to all of us and we can all have our views on how well it is managed and how well we are served. Comments and observations are either valid or they are not, but validity shouldn't depend on the source.

I enjoy reading this blog for the daily entertainment it provides. But this latest comment moderation flap proves even more what a joke it is. Are you sure you aren't just a bunch of little kids pretending to be adults? Is this for real?

However, integrity generally does depend on the source, and when the source is masked, it actually does matter. I'll leave it at that.

Glad to see the "real time" back. As I have stated before, censorship was of no concern to me but the real time leads to better discussions.

Missed you at last nights Meet 'N Greet at La Rosita's.

I see we have wasted no time getting back to the discussions.

Tuesdays are almost always meeting nights and unfortunately I was unable to attend the Meet and Greet.

Hopefully next time.

glad you are back. I would be interested in hearing a response to a posting that was placed on http://www.diogenestrainee.blogspot.com

The poster stated that after complaints to administration about delays in getting your patients scheduled for services, you were provided with YOUR OWN dedicated fax line.

Out of curiosity, I placed a call today and it is true, you have you own fax line for scheduling. I bet the other docs would like to know your response.

I am sure that any delay they are having now is a result of making your patients priortiy.

Just really think the statement deserves your feedback.

How do you go about getting a dedicated fax line into Floyd Memorial Hospital. Are you the only Physician that has these services, if so WHY?

I used to work in scheduling and this is true. This dedicated fax line was installed just to shut Dr E's office up. This has actually been like this for about 3 years and it was a rule that Dr E's orders be handled ASAP and in front of other Docs.

I have worked in registration and scheduling and these statements are not accurate.

We had major system problems over the years and extra lines were added. Dr. E has 5 physicians in his office and other offices also have used this line.

He had nothing to do with the decision to add this line. It was a temporary fix to a longstanding problem.

If administration would address concerns in a timely manner, nothing like this would have to happen

these are ludicrous comments. Physicians are customers to this hospital and if administration isn't meeting there needs, they will take their patients elsewhere.

HB does speak up and does get things done.

You people don't like to be held accountable for the problems.

HB expects quality care and excellence from everyone. If everyone tried to work by the CARE and SERVE standards we preach, none of this would be an issue.

If an administration really did this and hasn't readdressed the issue in 3 years as stated, I would concur that there is true incompetence in the organization.

O.K so lets say that the statement is true that the dedicated fax line is for ALL FIVE physicians in Dr E's office. Does that make it right to have a dedicated line for those Five? These five are the minority in patient referrals. Why give them special treatment? Do you really think they would have done it for the office of five if Dr E was not the leader of the pack? If I am a Dr that is forced to use the regular lines, then I am pissed off!

Wonder what other perks Dr. E. has received. Was this line installed while he was a board member? I don't blame the other Doctors in town for being upset. Dr. E. sure was not thinking of his patients when he decided to drop their insurance, forcing them to look for healthcare someplace else. Maybe someone should look into this dedicated line and see if it is still necessary.

Well, I see it has been an active bash session with limited information and false allegations, but not unexpected.

Several years ago there was a tremendous problem in this area. The issue was discussed with many individuals in administration and also in the Medical Care Meeting. My office manager and referral clerk worked with hospital personnel, PSN members and others on the problem.

Our office was the largest primary care group in Floyd County generating around 8-10 million dollars or more in revenue to the Hospital per year. Offices documented how many procedures were being sent other places because of the problem.

My office manager worked on and fixed the problem with the hospital. I, nor other physicians personally fax things to the hospital routinely and I do not know the fax number or where it is located. Our office staffs do this and take care of these types of problems.

Offices are customers to the hospital and generate the revenue for them. Meeting the needs of offices would seem appropriate. How they do this is administration's decision. The Board does not micromanage issues such as these.

Conveniently, you are now clueless about what happens at the hospital. I don't buy it.

Meeting the needs of offices run by members of the Board before other offices, however, does not seem appropriate.

These allegations are just false. These events occured years ago when HB wasn't even on the board. HB at least is willing to help solve problems.

Other physicians just quit sending patients, leave completely or take their procedures to their offices or their own centers. They never even try to help solve problems

Your personal and slanderous attacks are getting old

"Our office staffs do this and take care of these types of problems". Who is in charge of the office staff???? It still is preferential treatment anyway you cut it.

You conspiracy theorists are all nuts.

I want my doctor to have a direct access fax machine for expediency of my results and orders. Who wouldnt want their own doctor to have such a thing?

If my doctor thinks there is an issue with communication with the hosital and thinks he needs such a line, I presume he'll take action to get it.

It's that simple.

It doesnt make a physician "special", it makes him COMPETENT.

The folks suggesting that HB is getting "priveleged" treatment are fooling themselves, and wasting bandwith in the process.

Each of them should ask if their own physician is paying as much attention to their needs and treatment.

The fax machine doesnt make HB any more money - it just allows him to provide better PATIENT CARE. Isnt that the most important consideration?

Trust me - if all physicians were so conscientious, I would be out of a job.

So, if you'll let go of your "grassy knoll" suspicious and turn your attention to the real reason for this blog - improving healthcare for all of us in NA, we might all be better served.

I hate to be mean, but maybe you should try a spell checker and some punctuation corrections before submitting your comments since you do represent the legal profession :-)

Touché.

You've found my Achilles heel - its not my spelling that stinks, but rather, I'm a mediocre typer (especially without a spell checker on this blog).

So long as the general gist of my thoughts is understood, I'll be content, bad typing and all...

Cheers!

No one is questioning HB's ability as a physician. However, everyone who has been to a board meeting knows he does tend to showboat while occasionally presenting less-than-factual information to make administration and hospital departments appear inept. Instead of censoring comments on this blog, HB should censor letters written by his office staff alleging professional negligence by employees in some hospital departments.
