Not Recognizing and Understanding History


In between Obama apologizing for the United States and continually blaming prior administrations for everything, he recently made the following statement while in Turkey: "We do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation. We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values."

I’d like to hear him elaborate on exactly what ideals and values we are bound by and where exactly these values originate.

What is the foundation for these ideals and values? They have to be based on something if they are to have any meaning or relavence.

I’d say that looking at the Preambles of ALL 50 states; these historically have come from a belief in a supreme being and the values that are implied by those beliefs.

California 1879, Preamble We, the People of the State of California , grateful to Almighty God for our freedom...
Colorado 1876, Preamble We, the people of Colorado , with profound reverence for the Supreme Ruler of Universe...
Connecticut 1818, Preamble. The People of Connecticut, acknowledging with gratitude the good Providence of God in permitting them to enjoy.
Delaware 1897, Preamble Through Divine Goodness all men have, by nature, the rights of worshipping and serving their Creator according to the dictates of their consciences...

Indiana 1851, Preamble We, the People of the State of Indiana, grateful to Almighty God for the free exercise of the right to choose our form of government.
Iowa 1857, Preamble We, the People of the St ate of Iowa, grateful to the Supreme Being for the blessings hitherto enjoyed, and feeling our dependence on Him for a continuation of these blessings, establish this Constitution.
Kansas 1859, Preamble We, the people of Kansas, grateful to Almighty God for our civil and religious privileges establish this Constitution.
Kentucky 1891, Preamble... We, the people of the Commonwealth are grateful to Almighty God for the civil, political and religious liberties...
Louisiana 1921, Preamble We, the people of the State of Louisiana , grateful to Almighty God for the civil, political and religious liberties we enjoy.
Maine 1820, Preamble We the People of Maine acknowledging with grateful hearts the goodness of the Sovereign Ruler of the Universe in affording us an opportunity .. And imploring His aid and direction.

I think the words of William Penn are very appropriate:
“Those people who will not be governed by God will be ruled by tyrants.”

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."

How are those shared values specifically Christian, Muslim or Jewish? How does that make his statment untrue?

I think HB's point is that ideals and values have to have a foundational support otherwise they change with the wind.

This country historically was founded on Christian values. Since there were always controversies on doctrinal issues no single denominational viewpoint was recognized but a supreme being was what was considered the foundational value system

Disputing this cannot be backed up by any historical facts.

What does that have to do with HB's criticism of Obama's statement that we are a country of shared values rather than a Christian, Muslim or Jewish country. Like it or not, and a bunch of you obviously don't, we are a country made up of people from widely diverse cultural and religious backgrounds and we do a lot better than most other countries at living together harmoniously. I know you would prefer that everybody looks and thinks exactly like you do, but you are going to be very frustrated and unhappy until you give up that idea.

Not true, we would like your side to afford us the same tolerance we give you.

We understand diversity and accept it. But just mention anything Christian and your side does exactly what you are doing.

You must be paranoid. Where in any of the above comments is there "blame" or "critcism" (I fixed your spelling)? Your whole issue is that you want YOUR version of Chrisianity to be recognized above all other religions and when you don't get what you want, you scream persecution. You have the feedom to practice your beliefs all you want. You just don't have the right to jam them down everyone else's throat. And you can't deal with that.

I live in a community made up of christians, hebrews, muslims, atheists, buddhists, hindus, wiccans, and the occassional satanist.
And its F-ing WONDERFUL!!!
