Reprint of American Suicide

In 2005 Dick Lamm, former Governor of Colorado (Democrat), gave a very poignant speech at an immigration overpopulation conference in Washington, DC.

I thought with this being an election year and immigration being an important issue, it might be nice to revisit his thoughts.

His speech was on how to destroy America. In this speech, he described eight methods for the destruction of the United States.

He said, "If you believe that America is too smug, too self-satisfied, too rich, then let's destroy America. It is not that hard to do. No nation in history has survived the ravages of time. Arnold Toynbee observed that all great civilizations rise and fall and that 'An autopsy of history would show that all great nations commit suicide.'"
"Here is how they do it. First, to destroy America, turn America into a bilingual or multi-lingual and bicultural country. History shows that no nation can survive the tension, conflict, and antagonism of two or more competing languages and cultures. It is a blessing for an individual to be bilingual; however, it is a curse for a society to be bilingual. The historical scholar, Seymour Lipset, put it this way: "The histories of bilingual and bi-cultural societies that do not assimilate are histories of turmoil, tension, and tragedy." Canada, Belgium, Malaysia, and Lebanon all face crises of national existence in which minorities press for autonomy, if not independence. Pakistan and Cyprus have divided. Nigeria suppressed an ethnic rebellion. France faces difficult times with Basques, Bretons, and Corsicans."

Lamm went on: Second, to destroy America, "Invent 'multiculturalism' and encourage immigrants to maintain their culture. Make it an article of belief that all cultures are equal. That there are no cultural differences. Make it an article of faith that the Black and Hispanic dropout rates are due solely to prejudice and discrimination by the majority. Every other explanation is out of bounds.

Third, "We could make the United States an 'Hispanic Quebec' without much effort. The key is to celebrate diversity rather than unity. As Benjamin Schwarz said in the Atlantic Monthly recently: "The apparent success of our own multiethnic and multicultural experiment might have been achieved not by tolerance but by hegemony. Without the dominance that once dictated ethnocentricity and what it meant to be an American, we are left with only tolerance and pluralism to hold us together."

Lamm said, "I would encourage all immigrants to keep their own language and culture. I would replace the melting pot metaphor with the salad bowl metaphor. It is important to ensure that we have various cultural subgroups living in America enforcing their differences rather than as Americans, emphasizing their similarities."

"Fourth, I would make our fastest growing demographic group the least educated. I would add a second underclass, unassimilated, undereducated, and antagonistic to our population. I would have this second underclass have a 50% dropout rate from high school."

"My fifth point for destroying America would be to get big foundations and business to give these efforts lots of money. I would invest in ethnic identity, and I would establish the cult of 'Victimology.' I would get all minorities to think that their lack of success was the fault of the majority. I would start a grievance industry blaming all minority failure on the majority population."

"My sixth plan for America's downfall would include dual citizenship, and promote divided loyalties I would celebrate diversity over unity. I would stress differences rather than similarities. Diverse people worldwide are mostly engaged in hating each other- that is, when they are not killing each other. A diverse, peaceful, or stable society is against most historical precedent. People undervalue the unity it takes to keep a nation together. Look at the ancient Greeks. The Greeks believed that they belonged to the same race; they possessed a common Language and literature; and they worshipped the same Gods. All Greece took part in the Olympic Games. A common enemy, Persia, threatened their liberty. Yet all these bonds were not strong enough to overcome two factors: local patriotism and geographical conditions that nurtured political divisions. Greece fell. "E. Pluribus Unum"-- from many, one. In that historical reality, if we put the emphasis on the 'Pluribus' instead of the'Unum,' we will balkanize America assuredly as Kosovo."

"Next to last, I would place all subjects off limits; make it taboo to talk about anything against the cult of 'diversity.' I would find a word similar to 'heretic' in the 16th century – that stopped discussion and paralyzed thinking. Words like 'racist' or 'xenophobe' halt discussion and debate. Having made America a bi-lingual/bicultural country, having established multiculturalism, having the large foundations fund the doctrine of 'victimology,' I would next make it impossible to enforce our immigration laws. I would develop a mantra: That because immigration has been good for America, it must always be good. I would make every individual immigrant symmetric and ignore the cumulative impact of millions of them."

In the last minute of his speech, Governor Lamm wiped his brow. Profound silence followed. Finally he said, "Lastly, I would censor Victor Hanson Davis's book "Mexifornia." His book is dangerous. It exposes the plan to destroy America. If you feel America deserves to be destroyed, don't read that book."

It was reported that there was no applause and the atmosphere was described as a chilling fear that quietly rose like an ominous cloud above every attendee at the conference.

I am astonished that this particular speech came from a Democrat, but it is reassuring that there are a few out there who haven't checked their brains at the door of the democratic party.

In this time of election, I have major concerns over these same issues and the thought of Clinton or Obama becoming president is very disturbing. Both of them are poised to do exactly as described above and will continually erode what has made America great; common beliefs based on Judeo-Christian principles.

We claim toleration but certainly do not tolerate things when they have a Judeo-Christian statement or origin. Why is that?

We now have over 100 languages tearing at our educational and business systems rather than requiring English to be the national language. What purpose other than division does having all these languages provide to society?

It is time for America to make some tough decisions and acknowledge that what has made the USA great is our historical unity in Judeo-Christian moral and values.

It is time to bring these principles back as we make decisions for the future.

Am I being obtuse???? I thought the article was trying to argue the need for unity...yet although Greece was unified, it fell. Please explain.

This is nothing but the typical paranoia and fear of "the different" that fuels a lot of religious fundamentalists (a group to which HB adheres). This is the exact same kind of fear-mongering that was once directed at Jews, Italians, Irish, even German Catholics in the past. This country has weathered waves of immigration and has become far richer as a result.

Do any of the immigrants create problems, commit crimes or become dependent on government programs. No doubt. But native born Americans make up the vast majority of prison inmates, welfare recipients and annoying public cell phone users.

As for the fall of past societies or cultures. Guess what? They ALL eventually failed, whether they spoke one language or not. Societies and cultures work for a while and then they don't. And...for a vast number of reasons. To blame it all on cultural dilution is about as historically accurate as the "science" of Creationism. Of course, HB believes in that as well.

Right! We should all pay heed to Dick Lamm, a somewhat quirky (some would say weird)politician/writer. Yes, he was a former Democratic governor of Colorado, but he left the Democrats and joined Ross Perot's party. He said at the time he didn't want to join the GOP because it was controlled by right-wing fundamental Christians. Some readers may remember him for his infamous statements suggesting that older people have a "duty" to die and get out of the way. There is a lot more if you are interested. Just take a look at this website:

Sir, your hysteria isn't surprising. The idea that you are a local professional of some esteem is truly terrifying. Read your Borges and ponder thos civilizations which persisted. . .what, did you say that all groups of people have migrated and cultivated a sense of identity in flux and it is only frightened old men who wince at those alien tongues? You should be ashamed.

Anonymous 9:53 takes an opportunity to attack the religious beliefs of another.

Anonymous 11:38 uses his entire post to focus on the straw man and not the content of the message.

"Jon Faith" makes an unintelligible remark.

HB, is it possible to have an intelligent discussion?

Every one of us should be proud of our country. It must have something to offer. Otherwise, we wouldn't have an immigration problem to deal with.

We could be like China, which had the highest execution rate in the world last year. We could be like Russia, which has arrested and sentenced an American pastor to more than 3 years in prison for taking rifle shells as a gift to a friend in that country who had recently purchased a rifle. We could be like Iran, which has no legal system other than the word of its leaders.

There are plenty of other nations to choose from, yet people choose to come here. At the same time, the people who take this country for granted seemingly cannot say enough to destroy it. Similar to smokers who just can't get cancer fast enough.

It is always amazing that the "tolerance" that others preach is only a one-way street. Tolerance for the Muslims; tolerance for the homosexuals; tolerance for the choice to abort your baby. But when it comes to Christianity, the concept of American exceptionalism, the advocacy of Creation science, or the promotion of a pro-life philosophy, the "tolerance" comes to an end.

Gone are the days of civil discourse; of disagreeing with the message while respecting the advocate. It is this intolerance and internal quarreling that will bring down a society. Destruction comes from within.

Anonymous 8:47, this is exactly HB's point. Greek society had plenty of chains which could have united its people. Yet instead of finding common ground, the people turned to "local patriotism and geographical conditions that nurtured political divisions."

While it may have been worded better, the point is that the small issues eventually overwhelmed the larger bonds that made the country great. It is a picture of America today. Everyone can do it better; everyone has a better idea; everyone has a need to be heard over the next guy.

The foundation of liberty that made this country great has now bred a society of individualists who are too self-centered to realize what they have become. As in Greece, and every other society, pride will come before a fall.

Until America is truly humbled, and the people look to the needs of others before their own, the future is indeed frightening.

What does proud of one's country mean: is this intelligible? Is that a fair question to ask a bkack person? All of this presupposes a lasting society per se. The longest example of such would likely be Rome. How did it expand its borders, assimilate other cultures still demonstrate a purpose and profit? By the end of a sword and the recognition that a myriad cast brought more to the table. Keeep humming your affirmations, that your worry beads and a silver dollar mean a great deal in today's world.

Blame me for rereading, what do you expect from your xenophobic prattle about executions in China and curtailing of religious freedoms in Russia. One could ask questions about our own disproportionate prison poulations, our own hordes of uninsurewd, our own abbreviated life expectancy (by Western standards, of course) but then that wouldn't correspond to your thesis that EVERYONE wants to come here, with our spiralling currency, our bullying foreign policy, our greedy ingestion of nonrenewable resources. That is still, okay, right -- we have Hermano Jesus in our corner, unfortunately, your Savior speaks Spanish and he's feeling spiteful towards your cracker breathren. My spleen thanks you, Mr Grasshopper, follow the tanned and freckle-bellied and be delivered. You certianly that.

It is hard to imagine anything more preposterous than the idea that Christianity is somehow under attack and persecuted in America. Mega-churches abound and flourish economically in a tax free environment.

Now, if you call it persecution to protect schools from having to teach your brand of mythology under the heading of "creationism" or preventing the posting of YOUR version of God's commandments on government property then I suppose you can expect more of the same.

You don't care a whit about tolerance...just so long as everything you believe gets top billing. Your kind would be perfectly happy to see intolerant laws passed that mandated compliance with what you believe to be "God's Laws."

This is a great country and we can be very proud of the progress we have made over the years in making this a civil and relatively free society. But let's be honest with ourselves about our "foundations" as you call them. Those foundations included black slavery, voting rights for only property owning white males and the specific exclusion of Jews from universities and some professions for a long, long time.

We are a nation of immigrants and every succeeding wave has added richness and great value to the texture of this country. There is not a word being said about the current group of immigrants that was not said about the Irish, the Italians, the Poles, the Jews, the Chinese and others. And, I am sure the Native Americans had plenty to say about the first white Christian Europeans who arrived with their strange language, weird customs and a tendency to take over.

You might try to work up a little sympathy if not charity toward folks who come here trying to create a better life for themselves and their families.

your ideas of reality are skewed. This country has always accepted immigrants, but it always expected them to assimilate into the culture and become "Americanized" which included learning and using the English language primarily.

The Founding Fathers were primarily Christian and every document had its moral authority grounded in Christian principles.

Those are the facts whether you believe it or not.

Well, if you are so worshipful of those founding fathers, how come we gave up on slavery, second class citizenship for women and exlusion of certain races and nationalities from professions and higher education?

Come on! Be rational just for a minute. We are, and always have been, a work in progress--an evolving society. The "founding fathers" would hardly recognize what we have become but in many ways we are far more advanced and better off than we would have been if our society stagnated in the late 1700's.

All you children of earlier immigrants want to pretend that you have been here forever and that you somehow have some kind of exclusive ownership rights to being an American...and being able to define an American. We all got in on some kind of pass and it is ridiculous to pretend that current immigrants are a greater threat to "Americanism" than your ancestors were. Small minds are always afraid of "the different" and attack it as dangerous rather than just...different.
