Newest compensation numbers

Since we have recently been recieving more comments about salaries among physicians, I am showing the newest released average salaries of other types of healthcare workers.

This should put into perspective some of the comments made and the disdain some readers seem to have toward physicians.

These are the latest figures on average hospital based employee salaries. All of these have consistently shown increases. Physicians salaries on the average have decreased by 7% or more based on the most recent Medical Economics figures.

All areas of healthcare have seen increases in compensation and the perks that go with working at a large institution like hospitals also add to the appeal of these jobs.

Every one of these salaries is far above the average american wage as has been stated.

Are these salaries outrageous?

Do they represent fair compensation?

Does the educational requirements needed to attain these positions meet the readers expectations or should we have government regulate all of these wages?

A couple of questions.

What is the salary of our CEO?

How about a list of "average" physician salaries by specialization?

Just for comparison purposes.

The CEO makes over the 300 range as total cash compensation and this does not include the car, expense account, country clubs, etc.

Physicians average salaries are located at http://www.cejkasearch.com/compensation/amga_physician_compensation_survey.htm

Physicians have to fund their own retirements, pay their own health insurance and their malpractice and disabilities.

These things are also usually paid by companies for the CEO and other healthcare execs.

Petrino--20 million for 5 years

He gave up the chump change of 20 million 10 year contract

Since when was level of education a correlation to compensation? LeBron James has a high school degree.

Sure many executives are overpaid, but healthcare is not the only sector affected by this. I am more pissed off that the CEO of Coach made $60 million in 2005 than I am about a hospital CEO making $300,000.

Also, how much of the decrease in physician’s compensation is due to government limitations on the amount that will be paid for particular procedures?

Wouldn't it be interesting to see the average pay of the ones who do the direct patient care....I can tell you we make about 1/6th the amount of the CEO and that is after many years of experience and tenure. Is this fair???

Anonymous 2:25, "fairness" is a relative term. CEO pay that is only 6 times the average pay for employees is almost starvation wages for CEOs these days. Take a look at any of the senior guys at most American corporations these days and you will find executive pay more like 100 times employee averages.

The fact is that the market sets pay. You either pay competitively or you don't get good people. We can argue forever about the relative value of one job against another, but the reality is that some jobs pay more than others because the skills required are harder to find.

The fact is that the CEO chose to pursue a career in hospital administration. If you would like to earn a similar salary, you should pursue a similar career. Do not blame the CEO (or the powers that set his salary) for your own life choices.

Also, it is amusing that people often recite the line that "money isn't everything" while at the same time complaining that someone else makes more money. The grass is always greener somewhere else. You people with a chronic tendency to shoot arrows at everyone around you because "life isn't fair" are pathetic.

HB,
What you say is true but some of the lists that I have looked at said "net, after expenses" which I would assume means malpractice insurance, health insurance, etc.

Most of the lists place FP's in about the $140-150K average. I do not think that is particularly out of line. One other thing that is left out, in many situations for physicians, is the equity built up in a private practice that can then be sold. This can be quite a chunk of change.

Again, I think that the average salaries physicians earn are fair. While you may not mean to, you tend to come off almost pleading poverty and you just are not going to win that battle.

It should read, "Do the educational requirements needed to attain these positions meet readers' expectations, or should government regulate these wages?"

English should be a prerequisite for a medical doctor. Once you master your own language, we can discuss the education of others.

iamhoosier,

I think physicians make a very fair salary for their years spent in training.

It just get tiring to hear comments that physicians are so overpaid while other professions with much less training and education seem to get a free ride.

Thanks for the grammar check anonymous. Early morning writings aren't perfect. I am sure newspapers, news organizations, and yourself never make such an error. How is it being perfect? Please let the rest of us less-than-perfect beings know.

I did not see anyone with the name tag "Anonymous 8:46" last night, did you? I would think he/she would have been hard to miss, what with the halo and all.

Working in health care, and with Doctors and NP's everyday, I can assure you that the money a Doctor makes is not enough.
Not only must they wear the hat of physician, but also psychologist, pharmacist, social worker, staff management, and in some cases dietician. All the while knowing that if some one under them (meaning any one who works at a hospital, or doctors office) messes up when it comes to PT. care, it is more than likely going to be the MD with the lawsuit smacked on him/her. Society has set it up that if you smoke 4 packs a day, eating 1/2 pound bacon sandwiches, washing it all down a 5th of jim beam, when Joe Patient is lying on a stretcher having his 4th MI, and the chest xray shows lung cancer, and the labs show liver problems, if the patient so chooses, a jury would probably reward the patient with the maximum allowed in cash because the doctor didnt let him know every day that stuff can hurt you.

in regards to healthblogger's response to the anonymous writer about bad grammer, excuses will do nothing for you. Using proper grammer is for the benifit of those who read your blog and will also help clearly state your point. If writing early in the morning isn't your thing, may be you should consider wating until your brain is working properly sometime later in the day.

...just something to think about :)

HB is busy trying to make a change for the better in our community in addition to all of the other responsibilities on his plate. Cut him some slack anonymous 9:50. The fact he cares enough to make blogging a priority before starting his day shows his dedication to what he believes needs to be changed. I am sure he could use the extra hour of sleep.

I have no idea what you do with regards to improving the community but you certainly must have a lot of extra time on your hands to be so critical of spelling and grammer.

While spelling and grammer is important - being a catalyst for change is a much more worth while cause that should be forgiven an incorrect sentence here and there.

And I could care less what you think about grammer correctness of my writing.

TO ALL THOSE WHO CRITICIZED THE GRAMMAR IN THIS BLOG, I SAY. When all else fails, attack the person. (Appears to me an act of desperation)

First off, grammar, spelling and etc on this blog is insignificant and a petty attack opposed to the impact this blog has made for employees of the hospital in NA. I salute Dr. Dan for taking the time out of his busy schedule to mess with it. Anyone that knows squat about websites and their upkeep could relate to the time he actually takes to maintain this blog site. I know many that are patients of his or the group he is in and they are all satisfied with his care and concern as a doc and have even heard from some he goes the extra mile in emergencies and the unexpected, spending extra time with them in time of crisis.

I work at FMH as PRN and worked Friday night only to find my hours have been cut due to the budget constraints. I have worked more hours than originally committted to for 3 years now including a few holidays and more weekends than required. What gets my goat is I was brought up to speed on what was going on since I am not there to hear and see what all is occurring.

I can't comprehend the route the administration is taking with terminating the CFO (resignation on the books with comp), Retirement of Sue Bline (not her choice at that moment but with comp)and replacing her with someone the staff does not respect but obviously has impressed Quillman. The kicker to hear tonight was Surgery/ER director was given a choice between the 2 to direct and she chose surgery therefore a new director position is open. I'm foggy on this with my hours being cut and many other PRN and part-time emps hours being cut who deal with actual patients and satisfaction is not at par but administration chooses to hire another director? We had a pow wow at work Friday and we just haven't figured out the strategy and its not like we are informed of this. I am baffled by this but must admit I do not even know what some of those administration people even look like but only know their names. ~shrugs~

anony 2:52 - dont feel like the lone ranger. FT emps dont know the logistics either of whats happening. Its difficult to consume as they approve high paying positions and cut lower paid emps. The timing was off when they announced the cuts but approved a VP of HR. We were already confused with the higher grade of the receptionist for HR vs the department secretaries and they chose to hire outside although others applied who were equally qualified at best but chose the outsider. We don't know who they are related to yet or indirectly but based on history, must be an inside job choice. They have advantages in HR. Quality staff in HR but no better than staff in other areas yet they seem to recieve treatment others are not privileged to. Example is Joy Bell. She takes care of family medical and I have an ongoing family medical problem my doctor approved a couple of years ago. I heard she takes care of Kronos too. With no change in job responsibilities she is now considered a generalist and looking on the net, her salary has increased drastically due to the degree even though her job did not require said degree. Being HR, quick change, HR dir approves. NOT FAIR! Administration has lost their vision on what they want to be; forgot what it is like to be a "simple" employee; and has lost sight overall to the big picture. Just one mans opinion.

NOT FAIR anonymous has every right to be negative as he appears with teh changes/approvals. Floyd and their upper management is known for playing favorites. Its simply a matter of deciding if your livlihood is at stake if employed by them or if you take advantage of your insurance choices when the opportunity comes about to require medical care. I just hope they get it together before I have to undergo surgery in Jan.
